Thank you for joining us for episode 42. Today Matt Cooke chats with us about his secret sauce to being a boss! And that happens by unleashing the unconscious mind through meditation, failure and external environment (I thought it might be lots of mic dropping, but no). One of the things I love most about Matt is that he is very “woo” without being woo; he’s practical and gives us tips we can use today to be even better ass-kicking versions of ourselves.
So where does he get all this from? Matt is a certified 500 RYT yoga instructor (that means he has had 500 hours of registered yoga teacher training. That’s a lot!); he’s also a success coach and an author. His purpose is to help others live impassioned lives off the yoga mat and he uses movement and deep inquiry to do so.
The first topic we discuss is how we can use our minds to bring about more awareness in our lives. Matt starts his day with yoga and meditation, and he programs his mind and his awareness with specific personal creeds. This is something we can all do, even if we don’t have a lot of extra time. By repeating these mantras we can be aware of our thoughts and that awareness can open the door for new, more creative and supportive ideas and thoughts to come in.
We also talk about:
- Why movement matters, and how to add it to your day.
- How many thoughts do we have every day and how many of them are repeats from the previous day?
- When did Paul McCartney write Yesterday and why does it matter to your life?
- Why failing over and over again is so important.
- Is everyone a creative being or just those who are writers, artists, and dancers?
- And much more!
Matt shares his tip for creative problem-solving. He says we can add more creativity or creatively solve problems by going for walks and by working on other activities that have nothing to do with the issue we’re trying to solve. If you give your brain a rest and move on to something else if you’re stuck, it’ll come up with a solution without so much effort and strain. And if you’re anything like me (which I know are!) we can all use a little brain rest.
We also talk about a big one: failure. As adults we’ve gotten used to doing things perfectly, or not. Or beating ourselves up when something doesn’t go right or we think we’ve failed. Matt has learned that failure is part of fulfillment. He mentions Ramit Sethi who creates a spreadsheet every month and makes it a goal to fail at least four times! According to Matt, Ramit does this because he knows if he’s failing often enough he’s bound to succeed eventually.
What if we all took that approach in our lives and set a monthly failure goal? How different would our lives be? For starters we would have to get comfortable with imperfection, something we talk about a lot on this podcast. When we can be okay with our own imperfections we open the door for more growth, more lessons and more opportunities.
One last area Matt and I touch on is environment. Whether we realize it or not our environment plays a big role in our own development and the direction our lives go in. And environment encompasses everything from the desk we work at to the people we surround ourselves with in our daily lives.
The first place to start when looking at your environment is yourself. Ask yourself who do you want to be for the world? How do you want to show up in the world? When you can answer those questions then you can start cleaning, clearing and reorganizing your environment. You’ll know who you want to surround yourself with and how you want those surroundings to look when you’re clear on who you want to be and how you want to be in the world.
Matt really brought it for this episode and I’m excited for you to hear all we have to talk about, there’s even more in the show than what we mentioned here! So tune in, check it out and enjoy today’s episode of Your Kick Ass Life, with Matt Cooke!
